What is New Montana Voices 2017-08-09T22:55:52+00:00

New Montana Voices is a collaborative effort between founders Steve Moore and Cindy Edstrom, 2017 -2019 Montana Poet Laureate and founding editor of Many Voices Press Lowell Jaeger, and founder/editor of The Whitefish Review Brian Schott.  A more complete description can be found on our About Us page.

Who is eligible to submit their poetry/prose/photos 2017-10-02T18:39:48+00:00

All young adults within the traditional age range of a Montana High School student (9th – 12th grade) can submit their work.  But the entrant need not be a formal student in a public or private school. Students currently incarcerated, homeless, in treatment or group homes are also eligible to submit their work (and are encouraged to do so).  Naturally, home-schooled students are also encouraged to participate.  The intent is to canvass the entire high school aged population within Montana and seek out the new voices no matter their specific circumstance.

We are looking for art in 3 specific categories:  Poetry, Prose, and Photography.

How many rounds of submissions in a year will there be 2017-10-02T18:41:09+00:00

The rounds for submission will follow the traditional semester based school year.  Thus, there will be 2 rounds for submissions in each school year.  The first round of submissions will occur between October 1 and December 31 with prizes awarded in January.  The second round of submissions will be open from January 1 through May 31, with prizes awarded in June.

The magazine consisting of the compiled works of submissions for the school year will be made available in July or August, depending on printing schedule.

What are the criteria for photography entries 2017-10-02T18:42:18+00:00

Each photograph submitted must be the entrant’s own original work.  An entrant may submit a total of 6 photos per round. The file size is limited to 8 MB per photo, and the photo must include the exif data to be published with the photo.  Photos should be in .jpg format.  An accompanying paragraph describing the situation or circumstance behind the photo will increase the appeal for readers of the magazine.

What are the criteria for prose entries 2017-10-02T18:35:49+00:00

First and foremost, the entries must be the entrants own original work. Following that, an entrant can submit at most 4 prose compositions per round.  Each entry should be no more than 3000 words in 12 point Times New Roman font and double spaced.  The prose works must be in one of the following document formats:

  • .docx (MS Word format)
  • .doc (MS Word format)
  • .rtf (rich text format)

We can not accept .pdf or other formats since all entries placed in the magazine will need to be formatted for page size and font of the publication.

What are the criteria for poetry entries 2017-10-02T18:43:43+00:00

Most important — the poems must the entrants own original work.  Following that, an entrant can submit at most 6 poems per round.  The poems should be no more than 50 lines long.  The poem should be submitted in 12 point Times New Roman font in one of the following document formats:

  • .docx (MS Word format)
  • .doc (MS Word format)
  • .rtf (Rich Text format

We can not accept .pdf or other formats since all entries placed in the magazine will need to be formatted for page size and font of the publication.

Please note:  If the poem requires special or specific formatting then exceptions will be made to adhere to the poem’s typographic necessity.  Special note of the specific requirements must be included in the document.

Yes.  You may submit works in each of the 3 categories.

Can I enter in both rounds for a year 2017-08-09T03:17:08+00:00

Yes. It is hoped that everyone will participate on an ongoing basis.  Moreover, being awarded a prize in one round will not affect eligibility for any future rounds.

Are there prizes involved 2017-10-02T18:36:42+00:00

Yes.  In each category (poetry, prose, photography) there will be awarded a first prize of $300, second prize of $150, and third prize of $50.  Moreover, all entries of suitable merit will be published at the end of the school year (likely in early August) and each entrant whose work is published will get a free copy of the magazine and the ability to purchase additional copies at a 50% discount.

How will I know if I won a prize 2017-08-09T03:42:39+00:00

Prize winners for each round will be announced shortly after the closing of each round.  Winners will be contacted via email.

How will I know if my (poem/essay/photo) is going to be included in the magazine 2017-08-09T03:42:10+00:00

Shortly after the end of the second round of submissions, all entrants whose submissions have been chosen for publication in the New Montana Voices magazine will be notified via email of their selection.

How much will the magazine cost 2017-08-09T03:14:12+00:00

The compiled works from the school year will be published in a nicely produced paperback format on good quality paper and long lasting ink.  The specific price of the magazine will depend on factors which are unforeseeable in the future, factors such as cost of paper, pages printed, number of color vs. black and white photos, etc.  It is hoped to keep the price in the range of $10.
